The influence in our society of mobile phones would have been practically a chimera without the standardization, improvement and evolution of the protocols of the communications networks and their support by the operators. The first generation 1G, responsibility of Ericcson with the NMT system, was created in the year 1979. Since then, the evolution has not stopped its course until arriving at the fourth generation or 4G, that offered a greater security and quality of service (QoS ).

At this time, its main successor, 5G technology , has come to stay, offering greater performance with theoretical speeds of data transfer down to about 10 Gbps, a remarkable improvement compared to the 75 Mbps of generation previous.

What is 5G technology?

The 5G technology is presented, therefore, as the successor of the 4G generation, maintaining the functions of its predecessors in terms of instant messaging, calls and Internet browsing , with the exception that the connection will be much faster, navigating to some not insignificant 5,000 megabits per second.

Faced with such data, it would not be negligible to consider the fact that, for example, if with 4G technology it took us about six minutes to download a two-hour movie, now with 5G technology that time is reduced to the incredible 15 seconds , being twenty times faster.

In addition to its impressive degree of performance, this technology improves the level of latency significantly. And, is that, 5G technology is designed to manage all types of traffic with extremely low latency, being thus essential to power portable technologies, home devices or smart cars. In this sense, it is expected that the latency may fall below one millisecond.

At the level of speed, very diverse companies recognized internationally have created test networks and prototypes that are capable of supporting 5G networks . We only have to look at the Swedish company Ericcson to realize that last year managed to reach speeds of up to 5Gbps real, using the standard prior to the definition of the 5G protocol.

In the specific case of Spain, the organization that is contributing most actively to all these research and standardization works for the future of 5G technology in our country is Telefónica. The company plans to offer 5G in its services by the year 2020.

The 5G network has been built on the bases already established by the 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) already configured. As it was specified in previous lines, it will allow to send text messages, surf the net and make calls with a radically higher transfer speed.

Through the 5G network it will be easier for users to download and upload content in Ultra HD and 3D video. By increasing the download speed to 10 gigabits per second, the 5G network is now available in some test locations in the United States.

However, as we mentioned before, 5G technology goes far beyond smart phones, including sensors, cars, thermostats, cars, robots and other technologies.

At the same time, 5G networks will reduce, to the maximum, the delay time between the devices and the servers with which they communicate. In the case of cars that are driven autonomously, this technology will involve communication with virtually no interruptions between the car, other vehicles, external sensors and data centers. To achieve this, 5G technology will need to travel in very high frequency radio waves. The frequencies that are higher will have faster speeds and, therefore, greater bandwidth.

To do this, wireless companies must install thousands of small towers to incorporate on each light pole, inside each house and, potentially, in each room.

Instead of replacing it completely, 5G technology will complement this technology, so that in buildings and crowded areas, this innovative technology will provide greater speed, however, when you are driving on the highway, the 4G would be the only alternative, less during a certain time.

Although these networks will not be launched by wireless companies until 2020 , the fact is that this month 5G technology when an international consortium of wireless networks such as 3GPP came to approve a technology standard for next generation networks. Once the International Telecommunication Union of the United Nations revises this standard, companies will be able to buy and sell 5G equipment
